Your 4×4 Recovery Kit Should Include Shackles And More

If you like off-roading, you have to think about more than the fun. You have to plan for the worst by carrying with you a recovery kit. Your kit doesn’t have to include a lot — just some shackles, a first aid box and a few more key items.

The person who is attracted to the excitement of off-roading is probably not the same person who thinks about taking the time to pack a recovery kit. If that sounds like you, try to put your adventurous side on hold and think through possible difficulties you could encounter and prepare for them.

The first thing you need is a map of the area you are headed out to. Even if you have a GPS, it is good idea to have a printed map. GPS devices can have trouble connecting in rural areas and can run out of battery power. A map will never fail you unless you can’t see it so throw in a flashlight with extra batteries as well.

The next item to include is a tire gauge. Tire pressure is important for driving off-road. Your vehicle recommendations will include suggested pressure for normal and highway driving but not driving through rough terrain. You will need to play with the tire pressure to figure out what works best for you and you may need to adjust depending on the terrain. Most people find that lowering the tire pressure gives a smoother ride and provides more traction in muddy or rocky patches.

It is a good idea to keep an in-car or handheld radio with you at all times. You never know if your cell phone will have a signal so have a backup method of communication. You’ll also want to throw in a first aid kit.radio strap

The most common problem you run into when you are out having fun with your 4×4 is getting stuck. If you want someone to pull you out, you need to provide the recovery strap and shackles so you can be sure they are sufficient for your vehicle. The strap should designed to handle the weight of your truck – no more, no less. The shackles will have a rating stamp on them so be sure you have purchased the correct one for the job.

Now grab your recovery kit and head out the door for your next off-road adventure!
